mehbooba mufti Criticism From Congress Over BJP’s “Hypocrisy” In Questioning Its Coalition With National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir Polls 2024.

On Sunday, mehbooba mufti; the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came under attack from the Congress general secretary, Randeep Singh Surjewala, who accused it of hypocrisy after asking his party to justify its pre-poll alliance with the Farooq Abdullah headed National Conference (NC) for the upcoming Jammu & Kashmir elections. The National Conference and People’s Democratic Party were both previously partners of BJP.

“Have we ever asked about likely allies of BJP? So why does BJP question us? That is right. These are truths that you cannot refuse. Why do you question our alliance when BBP has previously been supported by PDP or NC?” ANI quoted a Rajya Sabha MP as saying.

Surjewala’s comments come in the wake of criticism by several BJP bigwigs against the grand old party for its alliance with NC, including Union home minister Amit Shah. The Congress had been warned well over time that it was playing dangerously with Indian national security and unity just to meet its greed for power. The Congress’s siding with the National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir polls has only served as yet another evidence that it is still acting true to form, according to a statement released on X by the Minister.

vidhansabha election

Last election in Jammu and Kashmir took place in 2014. After a hung assembly was produced by the results, two ideologically opposed parties—the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) under Mufti Mohammed Sayeed and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), entered into an alliance to govern the former state. In 2016 Mehbooba Mufti succeeded her father as chief minister upon his death.

However, in 2018 BJP stopped supporting Mufti’s regime leading to breakage of their partnership. Consequently, BJP-PDP government collapsed and J&K was put under governor’s rule for six months.

On November 21 same year, the then-governor Satyapal Malik dissolved the legislative assembly of Jammu & Kashmir. In 2019, Narendra Modi administration scrapped off Article 370 thus splitting J&K into two union territories taking away its unique status as a region.

Contrarily, during September-October of 1999 when Atal Bihari Vajpayee took charge of Prime Minister’s office for the third time, National Conference supported Bharatiya Janata Party. Farooq Abdullah was a “mistake” even after Gujarat incidents in 2002.
