Former spymaster of Pakistan faiz hameed, who was a contender for the highest army job, has been taken to a military prison 2024.

The former ISI boss accuses him on the following charges and is now facing court martial.

During his time as the head of the Inter-Services Intelligence organization, Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed allegedly misused his position by conducting a raid on a private property developer.

It is very rare for someone like Gen. Hameed to be arrested in this country and there has been much speculation about that decision. Many people believe it has to do with his close relationship with ex-prime minister Imran Khan.

He oversaw the ISI under Mr. Khan between 2019 and 2021 before retiring early in December 2022.

They were thought to have had an especially strong bond then.

The army’s official statement read thus: “the process of Field General Court Martial had commenced” while also adding that General Hameed’s arrest had been ordered by the Supreme Court.

A court martial is a proper military trial.

Additionally, it said that various “incidences of violation” had occurred since he retired contrary to what was stated in the Pakistan Army Act.

Retired officer Lt Gen Talat Hussain called the action “unusual” and said that many more arrests might come in an interview with the BBC.

Some experts argue that this arrest represents an attempt by military authorities to judge their personnel within their ranks.

According to Senator Irfan Siddiqi, a close supporter of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, such high-ranking officer’s arrest spells out no one can escape scrutiny.

On another note though, some think it could also be about settling scores considering; therefore, given hints on apparent rift between General Hameed and higher ups in army today.

Still others believed that those behind it were targeting anyone seen as pro-Imran Khan even if they were not engaged in politics.

Imran Khan used to be an integral part of Pakistan’s military structure. He has been held for almost 12 months and he is also facing a list of charges.

BBC’s former correspondent in Pakistan accused Gen Hameed in the past to have ‘selected’ Mr. Khan as a leader, says Hameed had boasted that he would become the new army chief.

Barrister Gohar Ali Khan who is the chairman of PTI party strongly denied that this arrest was related to his political campaign, reiterating that “what the security forces were doing was entirely internal affairs.”

The government has welcomed arrest.

There was no way to reach Gen. Hameed.
