The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, who is regarded as the architect of modern Brunei, is named after the 28th Sultan of Brunei and the father of the reigning Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah’s.
So as many members of the Indian community, students, academics, and local politicians, PM Modi interacted on many occasions with the large sections of the society of Indian origin.

PM Modi participated in the inauguration of the new Chancery of the Indian High Commission in Brunei and was warmly welcomed by the local Indian community. The new structure is situated beside the US Embassy premises at Jalan Duta Diplomatic Enclave in Bandar Seri Begawan.
The PM lit a lamp and unveiled a plate at the event in the presence of National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
As per the statement issued after the launch, “the chancery complex projects strongly anchored Indianness beautifully blending with historical elements as well as abundant tree planting”. While its design retains its attractiveness, it is complemented even more by the clever use of claddings and strong Kota stones that blend the traditional and the contemporary designs harmoniously. Apart from paying tribute to the great history of the Nation’s heritage, the design also uses an airy friendly approach.”
In the bands of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Prime Minister Modi who arrived at the Brunei’s Bandar Seri Begawan Airport on Tuesday afternoon commenced his two day tour to Brunei Darussalam. This is the first time an Indian PM has visited a country in the Southeast Asia on a bilateral visit.
The Prime Minister visits Brunei on a historic occasion, the 40th year in June which also marks the same month when India and Brunei established diplomatic relations.
