Afterward, Bhola Singh, Bharatiya Janata Party MP for Bulandshahr told The Indian Express that the delegation had members from both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha who belong to SC/ST. “We let him know how concerned we were over the Supreme Court judges’ remarks about the creamy layer in the SC/ST communities. He reaffirmed that government is committed to welfare of SC and ST populations and promised that nothing would be done.

Later on Modi wrote in X that, “Today I met a delegation of MPs belonging to SC/ST community.” We also took time out to write down our commitment towards improving lives of people in minority groups.

On August 1, six out of seven judges voted in favour of state power to further subcategorize their ST/SC population for reservations. Judge B R Gavai in his opinion held that States must design a scheme so as to identify its ‘creamy layer’ among its ST/SC population which could be excluded from availing benefits under reservation system. There were 3 other Justices behind him.

pm modi news, government wants to bring in creamy layer (exclusion)

narendra modi news

BJP MP Suresh Kumar Kashyap from Himachal Pradesh confirmed this while talking with The Indian Express about their meeting with PM where he said this was the only agenda. “The Prime Minister promised us that the government would not move in this direction when we visited with him merely to deliver the memo. The Prime Minister clarified that Justice Gavai’s remarks were only observations and did not impose any obligations on the government.

Delhi BJP MP Yogender Chandolia told The Indian Express; “Our opponents are spreading rumors that the BJP-led government wants to bring in creamy layer (exclusion), but this observation was not part of the verdict.” We actually went to meet PM who assured us that SC/STs will have their own creamy layer. As for me I know for sure that on such an issue, our party president Mr. Amit Shah, PM Mr. Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party are at one with each other.

The same guarantee by the PM is mentioned too by Faggan Singh Kulaste (a MP based in Madhya Pradesh) belonging to ST tribe. He went on saying, “There were four judges of Supreme Court who expressed opinion that there should be creamy layer exclusion among SC/STs but it was not part of judgment of Court.”

pm modi news, discussions on sub-classification within SC/STs

today pm modi news

It was agreed by MPs that discussions on sub-classification within SC/STs under Supreme Court’s ruling never happened.

No official statement has been made yet by BJP regarding its August 1 ruling. Its partner Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) which has a large Dalit vote bank has conveyed its disappointment over this decision and intends filing a review application before it is done away with.

However, it is important to note that the recent Lok Sabha elections have shown a waning support for the BJP among the SC/STs. The party itself was aware of this fact. “Misleading” campaign by opposition, as per BJP officials implied that a strong BJP regime could amend the Constitution and do away with reservations for SC/STs.
