Meet Kamala Harris, a candidate who will replace Joe Biden in 2024. How does she relate to India?

A person of Indian descent and the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, is expected to be the Democrat’s presidential candidate.

The Democrats, if Kamala Harris ran for the presidency, would be in trouble. He even went to an extent of suggesting that Harris was unqualified as a president or as a candidate due to her ‘bad’ record in crime fighting during the Biden administration.

Kamala Harris top contenders for Democratic nomination in US Presidential election

Kamala Harris, vice president of the United States became one of the top contenders for Democratic nomination in US Presidential election after current US President Joe Biden bowed out from competition.

On X, Joe Biden posted that he would not run for re-election “in the best interests” of his party or nation and instead endorsed his vice president Kamala Harris as new Democratic nominee for similar office.

As far as being “honored to have, my goal is to earn and get this nomination”, Kamala Harris said in the statement also.

Who Is She? Kamala Harris

Kamala Devi Harris was born in California and her parents were Donald J. Harris a professor and Shyama Gopalan a Tamil biologist.

Following their parent’s divorce, Kamala Harris’ mother had sent her through several different schools before they decided that she should study at Howard University- an exclusive all black college.

After attaining her political science/economics degree she went on to be admitted into the bar association in 1990 where she worked as an attorney until 1998 when she was elected San Francisco district attorney. In the same year she served as deputy district attorney for California as well

San Francisco appointed her district attorney in 2003. From 2010 until two terms later (2014) She has been an elected attorney general of California; then elected junior U.S senator from her state in 2017.

She entered Senate being first Southeast Asian woman and second African American Woman respectively.

Gun control measures, Immigration citizenships together with health/tax changes are some examples which made Kim popular during these years.

She ran for President of America but relinquished her aspiration to become the Democratic nominee in favor of Joe Biden, who got her as his VP.

Kamala Harris Indian-American face

Indian-American Harris faces an uphill challenge in getting her party’s nomination with former President Trump re-election campaign gaining steam.

If she wins the nomination, Harris will be the first woman ever and Indian descent to run for political office in America; she would also become the country’s first female president as well as person of Indian origin.

The identification of herself as an Indian is expected to matter in these upcoming elections considering that JD Vance, the Republican vice presidential candidate is married to an immigrant hence he can easily appeal to this group.

Kamala Harris rivals are potential.

However, even senior White House officials and campaign staff were not informed of Mr. Biden’s decision until seconds before his statement appeared on Sunday afternoon, thought the President had talked to Ms. Harris and a few others as per BBC sources.

This was immediately applauded by several top Democrats including and other leading Democratic leaders; for example, Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and President Barack Obama who commended this move by Mr. Biden among others for his achievements in office.

As the party’s nominee for the November election, Kamala Harris received support from former president Bill Clinton and 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton “we will give it everything we’ve got” (he said) to ensure she is elected.”

Nevertheless he praised her but did not back her openly or any other candidate because there might be a ‘outstanding nominee’.

I have not heard from Ms. Pelosi.

The first Democrat to urge Biden to drop out of his re-election campaign in 2020 was Senator Peter Welch who called for an open process to select Harris’ opponent.

But some prominent figures including those that were touted as possible contenders against Mr. Biden if he stepped down seem likely to rally behind her.

Governor Gavin Newsom of California is rumoured to run for president himself called Mr Biden selfless’ while personally endorsing Ms. Harris as someone who is fearless and tenacious in opposition against Trump.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro stated: “I will do everything in my power to help elect Kamala Harris as the 47th President of the United States”.

Pete Buttigieg who was also one of the contenders for presidency declared Joe Biden to be one of the most consequential presidents in American history saying that I would do all that I could so that Kamala takes over the mantle next time around.”.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan said she would continue with my work….”trying to elect Democrats and stop Donald Trump.”

Similarly, the DNC applied to change its fundraising group names into Harris Action Fund and Harris Victory fund.

A pair of notable Democratic financiers: Reid Hoffman, a co-funder of LinkedIn, and Alexander Soros, financier lent their open support for Harris.

Within an hour after Biden’s statement in favor of Ms. Harris, the pro-Trump super-PAC campaign fund Make America Great Again had posted an ad accusing her of “covering up Joe’s obvious mental decline”.

Trump went on say that whoever the left puts up now will be more like what we have seen before.
